
Meet Sam
Former Chief Justice of the Peace Sam Bateman was elected Judge in November 2016, and presided over Department 1 for seven years. Henderson Justices of the Peace handle civil cases, small claims, criminal cases, temporary protective orders, and evictions. Sam left his position following his appointment as Deputy County Manager for Clark County
As Deputy County Manager, Sam and his team oversaw the Clark County criminal justice system, including the District Attorney’s Office, Public Defender and Special Public Defenders’ Offices, the Justice Courts and District Courts, the Coroner’s Office and the Clark County Detention Center.
Before taking his position on the bench, Sam was twice elected to represent the residents of Henderson on the City Council. As City Councilman for Ward 4, Sam was instrumental in helping Henderson become one of America’s safest and most livable cities. Sam also served regionally on the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, the Southern Nevada Water Authority Board of Directors, the Clark County Debt Management Commission, the Colorado River Commission of Nevada, and the Southern Nevada Health District Board.
A Henderson resident since 1999, Sam was appointed to the Henderson Planning Commission in 2007 by then Mayor James B. Gibson. He went on to be elected Planning Commission Chairman in 2010 and served until his election as Councilman. In 2004, Sam was hired as a Deputy District Attorney for Clark County, Nevada, and prosecuted criminal cases until his election as Justice Court Judge in 2016.
During that time, Sam also represented the Nevada District Attorneys Association, advocating at the Nevada Legislature for public safety in Nevada.

Originally from Bountiful, Utah, Sam Bateman received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Utah. He continued his studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, graduating from the UNLV Boyd School of Law in 2002, and then clerking for a Federal District Court Judge and working as an Associate Attorney practicing civil litigation at a large statewide law firm.
